Inside Chapter One

Survival Has a Price

The message was waiting on Facebook:

Jeanine, Dominique’s dad is trying to get hold of you.

I had never met him. I had never spoken to him. A telephone number followed the message.

“How bad is it?”

He did not know.

That call began fifteen days in which every morning brought hope - and almost every day brought another complication.

One daughter was conscious and injured in the emergency department at Beaufort West Provincial Hospital. The other was being kept alive by paramedics before a long ambulance journey to George. Around us, hospitals were overwhelmed, families were saying goodbye and ordinary life had stopped.

The broken contents of Natasha’s car followed us. A suitcase had been crushed in half. Shoes, a hair straightener and other belongings were damaged beyond use. We put the wreckage out for collection.

The collision had already begun generating a second record: accommodation, food, fuel, travel, time away from work and the things a family pays for while nobody is yet looking at money.

Chapter 1 of The Debt File reconstructs those first fifteen days through memory, contemporaneous Facebook updates, medical records and the accounts of those who were there.

It is a story about survival - but also about the moment a family emergency quietly begins becoming a financial and administrative file.

The collision happened in seconds. The debt file took years to become visible.

One Woman, Four Banks and the Fight for Proof

The debt did not begin with irresponsibility.

It began after a catastrophic family accident in December 2014 created a medical, emotional and financial aftershock that continued long after the emergency was over. Years later, as balances grew and collection matters moved between banks, attorneys and agencies, Jeanine began assembling the files and asking a different question: what can each institution actually prove?

This is not a story claiming that every bank was wrong or that every debt simply disappeared. It follows how someone under severe medical and financial pressure responded to formal legal processes, challenged untested claims and insisted that every amount be supported by the correct documents, calculations and procedures.
